A routine dental cleaning starts with a health check and, in many cases, blood tests to make sure the patient is ready for a general anesthetic. Anesthesia lets the team clean below the gum line safely and without stress.
Once the patient is asleep, the nurses chart every tooth, remove plaque and tartar with an ultrasonic scaler and take dental X-rays to look for problems hidden beneath the gums.
The teeth are then polished to smooth the surface and slow the return of plaque. The nurses finish by showing owners how to brush at home and which dental chews are worth trying.
As a retired RN….found it very interesting. I’ve done rescue and trapping wild cats for spay/neuter. My four legged children have had a variety of surgeries too.
