Emergency vets explain the warning signs and the first steps to take on the way to the clinic

Heatstroke can develop quickly on warm days, especially in flat-faced breeds, overweight dogs and older pets. Early signs include heavy panting, drooling, bright red gums and a reluctance to keep walking.
If a dog shows these signs, move it into the shade, offer small amounts of cool water and wet its coat with cool rather than ice-cold water. Fanning helps the water evaporate and brings the temperature down faster.
Even when a dog seems to recover, the vets advise calling the clinic on the way in, because internal effects can appear hours later. Walking early in the morning or late in the evening is the easiest way to avoid the problem.
As a retired RN….found it very interesting. I’ve done rescue and trapping wild cats for spay/neuter. My four legged children have had a variety of surgeries too.
